Nestled a mere three kilometres from Kuah Town, the Langkawi Orchid Farm is a jewel in the making! Popularly pronounced to be one of the best things to do in Malaysia, this farm is more than just any other farm: It is a farm filled with the gorgeous scents, colour and magnificence of tropical orchids!
Whether you’re a nature-lover or someone who just loves flowers, then the Langkawi Orchid Farm should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Langkawi! Let’s take a look at what the Langkawi Orchid Farm has in store for you!
Today, the Langkawi Orchid Farm is the largest in northern Malaysia and showcases over 200 species of delightful orchids over a space of three acres! However, this was not always the case. Starting off small, Daniel, the owner, grower and collector extraordinaire of orchids wanted to own an orchid farm which would one day be amongst the biggest tourist attractions in Malaysia. Over the years, the collection grew, the orchids bloomed and voila! A tiny place in Langkawi growing orchids now offered the largest collection of orchids in the whole of Northern Malaysia!
The Langkawi Orchid Farm is home to some very rare and precious orchids, a few of which can only be obtained at very expensive rates and at only select florists! Most of the species found here are tropical orchids, which are quite hard to come by. One of the precious orchids found here is the Dancing Lady, which is a lovely Oncidium Hybrid coveted by many collectors for its unique look – It resembles a dancing ballerina wearing a yellow skirt!
Another favorite is the Dendrobium, which is generally used to showcase ornate dining tables! The Tiger Orchid is a must-see, both for its size (2.5 meters in height) as well as for its rarity – there are only very few of these in the world, since they only flower once in every two-four years. Amazing, right?
Other intriguing species of orchids include the Antelope Orchid famed for its petals which resemble antelope horns as well as the world’s smallest orchid which is only 2 mm in width from one petal tip to the opposite petal tip! These orchid species make the Langkawi Orchid Farm one of the most interesting places in Malaysia!
If you’re lucky, you might see Daniel, the owner around the place. He’s sure to give you or organize for you a guided tour so you can learn all about orchids! Why not pass by in the afternoon when the delightful scent of the orchids is strongest, and enjoy a cup pa after your stroll at the farm café?
While the Langkawi Orchid Farm is considered to be one of the main things to do in Langkawi for tourists, it also offers ample opportunities for learning for students! Children can come for an overnight camping package where they stay in tents on the farm grounds and learn about fish farming (there’s a fish pond!), rain-water collection, composting and sustainable farming practices!
The Langkawi Orchid Farm is open from 10 am to 6 pm, although afternoons tend to be busier than mornings. The Langkawi Orchid Farm is truly a work of art, perseverance and luck. Orchids need very preferential treatment to grow and thrive and take years of patience! While there, please ensure you don’t touch anything, throw litter or damage any plants. Also, while in Langkawi, let’s adopt global eco-tourism principles and help conserve our environment for the future generations to enjoy!
