Tasik Dayang Bunting–The Gorgeous, Mystical Lake of the Pregnant Maiden!

Set in a beautiful valley on the Island of the Pregnant Maiden, Pulau Dayang Bunting, Tasik Dayang Bunting is an oasis of peace, beauty and serenity! This picturesque freshwater lake is also known as the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden and is considered to be one of the most serene and beautiful things to do in Langkawi!

Nestled in the heart of Pulau Dayang Bunting which is one of the gorgeous islands that make up the Langkawi Archipelago, Tasik Dayang Bunting in Langkawi is a must-do is you’re heading out there and thinking of what to do in Langkawi or where to go in Langkawi! With an almost-religious silence, this island recreates the atmosphere of an outdoor place of worship!

Formed when one of the largest limestone formations on the island collapsed, Tasik Dayang Bunting is the perfect nature spot with its calm waters and scenic surrounds of mountains and meadows. The name Tasik Dayang Bunting is the ideal symbolism that personifies the marble and granite bedrocks that set in place to form the shape of a pregnant woman lying down on her back.

Let’s take a look at the tales that make Tasik Dayang Bunting one of the mystical places to visit in Malaysia!

The Legends and the Tales!

Tasik Dayang Bunting is like most other nature spots in Langkawi: it has its own myths and legends, the most famous being the myth of the celestial princess Mambang Sari! Also famously known as the female genie, Mambang Suri had her soul-mate in Mat Teja.

The story goes like this: Mambang Sari was an enchanting princess who used to visit the island often and make merry with her maids. Once, Mat Teja saw her and fell head over heels in love with this princess. He tried to tell her and followed her everywhere but was not successful until he met an old man who told him that the answer to his problem was mermaid tears. He went to sea and obtained mermaid tears and splashed them on his face. When Mambang Sari saw him, she fell in love!

They got married, she got pregnant and decided to stay by Tasik Dayang Beranak (The Lake of the Born Maiden) to have her child. Unfortunately, her son died after seven days. Devastated, she laid him to rest in the lake. As she did this, she laid a blessing for the childless and barren women to help them conceive if they had a swim in the lake. And this is how Tasik Dayang Bunting got its name.

This myth and the lay of the land in the form of a pregnant woman might be mere coincidences, but they have served to strengthen the faith of the local folks who truly believe in the blessing laid by Mambang Sari!

How the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden Helps Women!

Tasik Dayang Bunting is globally famous for helping women become pregnant! Apparently, there are some mystical powers within the lake that help barren women who are having difficulty in getting pregnant: all they have to do is take a dip in the cold waters of the lake! Women from all over the world come to this lake in the hopes that it will help them get pregnant. This belief is also very strong in the local people of Langkawi and Southeast Asia in general.
