Experience Marvelous Island View at Gunung Mat Cincang

Since being bestowed with UNESCO Geopark status in 2007, Langkawi Island has been at the forefront of much tourism efforts. Although a popular local tourist destination prior to that, Langkawi Island has now achieved international status whereby you will note the number of international travellers visiting the island for its rich history and beautiful natural formations. Whether it is the long spread of beaches or the natural environs, Langkawi Island remains a viable tourist destination. One of the most beautiful areas of the island would be Gunung Mat Cincang which stands at a little over 700 meters. This mountain happens to be the second highest peak in Langkawi Island and the scenery from the peak is a sight to behold.

One of the more interesting aspects of Gunung Mat Cincang has to do with the legend behind the formation of this mountainous wonder in the first place. Legend has it that Mat Cincang was a real person and together with Mat Raya and Mat Sawar were good friends. Unfortunately, during the wedding day of Mat Cincang’s daughter and Mat Raya’s son, harsh words were exchanged and the two gentlemen got into a big argument. It ended with various kitchen utensils being thrown at each other. The fight ended with Mat Sawar managing to cool down Mat Cincang and Mat Raya’s tempers but as punishment, all of them were turned into mountains. Looking at the formation of the mountains, you can still see Bukit Sawar in between Gunung Mat Cincang and Gunung Raya as if it were still mediating between the infamous fight.

In terms of the view, nothing beats the sight that greets you once you reach the top of Gunung Mat Cincang. It is not for nothing that this particular mountain is high on the list of Langkawi’s Geopark development site plans. Conservation of the mountain and its surrounding environs is definitely in the works to ensure that future generations of locals and visitors can continue to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. As a responsible traveller well versed with ecotourism, you can play your part by keeping good care of the pristine surroundings while you are on holiday there.

Most people who have been to Gunung Mat Cincang remain impressed with the amazing and breathtaking view of the islands of Langkawi which you can see clearly from the top. On good weather days, you can even spot a bit of neighbouring state Kedah’s mainland as well as the Tatutao Islands which belong to Thailand. It is no wonder then that the view from the top is highly photographed and many tourists brave the trek up the platform in order to commit to memory the amazing sight.

One way you can go up Gunung Mat Cincang would be to avail yourself of the cable car service which will carry you to the top of the mountain. You can either opt to stop at the halfway point or go all the way up. Either way, you will be met with beautiful views depending on your vantage point. Those who are hungry and who want to enjoy the view at night can also head up to the top of Gunung Mat Cincang to sample the delicious buffet dinner spread at the restaurant there. The atmosphere is delightful and the food is a perfect accompaniment to it.

Alternatively, those with enough stamina and courage can opt to climb up Gunung Mat Cincang. Of course, you would need to get a good guide to bring along with you. Be careful of taking this route as it is certainly not for the faint hearted. You would also need to ensure you have the proper equipment and travelling gear so that your movement is not impeded. You will be well rewarded once you reach the top because the views here would be even more delightful than the ones from the top of the platform. An additional bonus would be a stop by the Seven Wells Waterfall which is said to be the bathing place of the mountain fairies.

Yes, you definitely cannot stop by Langkawi Island without visiting the natural wonder that is Gunung Mat Cincang. As always, do be mindful of local cultures and customs when visiting new places. This is especially so if you are planning on hiking up the mountain. Make sure that you have a reputable guide following you on the trek because mountain routes are always perilous. Additionally, always keep your litter with you. If you follow the normal guidelines, there is no reason your visit to Gunung Mat Cincang will not be a happy and enjoyable one.
